help me compare 2 E70's - high spec v low spec

I realised I made big mistake leaving the X5 ship and am in the market again!

I am looking for an Xdrive40d M sport in white. I Like this one - clicky - Despite the very high level of spec , I feel it is overpriced - Glass' gave me a valuation of £30,370 for a dealer sale and that was adjusted for mileage and options.

At the same time, there is a sept 2010 60 plate 40d M sport with 40k up for £25,450 - private seller. FBMWDSH, side view, topview, heated seats, nappa leather, power boot, soft close doors, media pack, blouetooth, voice control, folding mirrors, pro nav. Based on the date of registration, I'm guessing it doesn't have combox which I would have retrofitted along with USB.

As a cash buyer, which would you go for and why. And the actual cost is not my main issue - it's the 'value' (or should I say worth) of the car; whether it is overpriced for what it is and therefore whether I will be very disappointed at what I will get for it if I sell it in 2 years! The high spec one is screaming at me as it will be very hard to find that spec again, but I just think it's overpriced and the dealer won't budge.

Hi, I am in a similar situation as looking to upgrade, personally I think it depends on if the higher priced car is within budget, in which cas e are there feature you want on the expensive one over the cheaper car.

I know when selling in say 3 years although probably no extra on price the car with added features will sell quicker.

Ps there is a white 40d at dick Lovett in Swindon for 34k with even more spec and that's a BMW dealer if that helps

Good luck
Graeme

It is within budget, and I would like the extra features but I know I couldn't possibly 'need' all of those extras, and I'm struggling to justify the price difference between fully loaded and partially loaded. The premium is rather larger. On the other hand, if I don't buy it I will probably not see that level of spec again while I'm searching. I guess I'm asking, should I overpay to get what I want if I won't get the same elsewhere?

I've seen the one at Dick Lovett but disregarded it because:

Although it's also a 61 plate, it has 10k more miles and is £2k more. It also doesn't appear to have 7 seats (not that I need them, but its a nice to have).

I think the only things it has that I would like over the £32k one is the professional hifi (which I think is one better than 'advanced' isn't it? Hard to tell with BMW and the way they name them) and the fact that it's an AUC car with their warranty. But the 10k fewer miles on the cheaper one makes the Dick Lovett one a non-contender at the moment.

Wow - I have a 40d white 61 plate which I bought a year ago for 30k. Brilliant car - loads of options almost everything...
Just finished AUC warranty and have bought 2 years comp warranty - love the 40d

You did well - either that they're holding their value really well. What mileage was it on when you purchased? Also, if it has HUD and comfort seats - fancy selling it?  ;) :))

As a cash buyer I would at least try and haggle with the over priced one. Let him know it's a high price. Have a figure you're happy to pay and stick to it. At the end of the day if the dealer won't budge then you know there are others around.

I went to see the big spec car today and the dealer was a lot more open to negotiation in person. We agreed a price that I am happy with and I collect it tomorrow!

Thanks all.

This will be my 4th X5 and I still can't think of anything I'd rather have! Dunno what I was thinking with the A7!

I've just read through the full spec and must say that's got to be the most specced BMW I've ever seen.  Plenty to make returning to the X that much nicer.

Hi and congrats on the car sounds very nice with all that spec,

I went to see a 40d at BMW dealer for 28k but turned out it has been badly repaired on the offside rear door and offside rear quarter, which now puts me off the franchise dealer a bit.

Terrible - although not surprising; I've read of poor repairs and other 'issues' being found on so called AUC cars. There is no substitute for your own thorough inspection - no one will be as picky as the person who is about to buy it!

Quite right, and there was me thinking I was the only fussy git out there, well that's what the dealer would have me believe, and of course I believe everything he tells me............ ::)

Picked up the car on Tuesday - very happy with it and the spec is amazing.

I'm debating paying for the connected drive account, but is it really worth £120 a year just for internet and concierge services?
