i went and test drove the x5 mentioned in the title yesterday very impressed especially how firm it felt on the road, it's done just under 120k new gearbox, turbo, bushes and tyres.
However there were a couple of things i'm not to sure about.

When i first started it up we had left the engine running for about 10 minutes while looking round/chatting etc, on turning the engine off there was like a whirring noise from the passenger side of the engine bay coming from a silver box on top of the engine this went off after a couple of minutes.

The other thing was the display for the stereo(non sat nav) unreadable due to the amount of pixels missing also a few missing under the speedo.
Other than than the overall condition was very good just the usual wear and tear for a vehicle of it's age

Firts one is the webasto heater and nothing to worry about ....in fact it's showing you it's working  (pre heats the car)

second is dead pixels and is fixable or repairable ;)

thanks for that x555.
On the pixel issue is it much of a job to to replace the existing display with the satnav/tv unit, if at all possible

I'M pretty sure it's possible but would cost a small fortune to do so (aroung the £1500 mark i think  ) :headbang: ....could be worth looking at an aftermarket solution!

hi
think x555 might have added 1 too many zeros on that
mine cost 120 to have fixed with a guy called rudi in southampton in 4 days inc sending there and back. i think his web is bmwpixelfix.co.uk or com cant remember. but works great. but knowing what i know now i would have put that money to a new mod headunit with nav ,bluetooth,tv ipod etc.and you keep you obc with them and existing changer
something to think about
good luck :D

No added zero's mate.......richjt asked about replacing the stereo with the sat nav unit ;) (not sending off to be repaired)and oem would cost you around the £1500 mark and probably more which is why i suggested the posibility of an aftermarket solution like you did!

Regarding the display, I was quoted 170 to fix mine from rudi but my display was cracked. I bought a brand new display from eBay at £105 delivered and takes two minutes to fit. I Need to send my instrument cluster to rudi for repair, problem is taking the car off the road for 4 days

I too have a 3.0d 2002 - mine did not have the comms pack - it also had a badly pix-elated CD Unit.
To get the pixels put right i figured was going to cost £150, to have a basic Parrot fitted was £200, and a Satnav 'stuck on window' another £150 - it was a no brainer to go ahead and take the existing unit out and replace with a nice modern Double DIN kenwood satnav/CD Player/DVD Player/Iphone compatible etc etc
I priced, from an ICE installer - retrofiting 2nd hand OEM BMW stuff he had from a 7 series - that did not have all the functionality of the above and he estimated 2 grand.
The unit as I describe above, with the work to install, and the double din fascia unit can be done by ice installers for around £800.
If you do a search there are some posts on the same topic - there is now becoming available a Chinese unit - that looks OEM but has more functionality. I have also posted some photos of my unit.

Does anyone know how much it would be for a detachable towbar to be fitted to this vehicle

It very much depends on which one you go for. Westfalia make the genuine ones and are the most expensive. I priced these up at about £430 + fitting with the dedicated single 13 pin electrics with a 7-13 pin adaptor included. Witter are a lot cheaper and non-dedicated electrics brings the price down quite a bit too. I know when the genuine ones were fitted they also include harder rear suspension and electrics for stability control but am not sure if the stability control works with retrofitted bars?
