Sunglasses holder mystery - anyone know the answer?

A friend of ours has the pre-facelift model and in the overhead console there is a drop down sunglasses holder that is accessed by pressing a button on the edge nearest the rear

On my facelift there is a panel where the sunglasses holder should be with grills/slots in in and the button looks solid...as in not a button at all

I've tried to find this mysterious part on realoem without success. I'd like to retrofit if I could but I can't work out why mine should have grills in a blanking plate. It may have something (like an alarm) behind it....but shouldn't all X5s have alarms?

Yours....coveting the sunglasses holder but needing a pointer or help....Mike

Certainly my facelift version has the interior sensors for the alarm system and the microphone for the hands free system built in there. I also have a pano sunroof although that may make no difference. My overhead panel does not open, and I can't see a retofit unit either. Some versions have an SOS switch located there too, as does my X6. Gets embarrassing if you flip down the cover and press the red button behind it wondering 'i wonder what this button does?' and (possibly) expecting a James Bond moment only to find you are talking to the Emergency Service.. :D :?

It won't be any comfort to you but I recall this being a sizeable topic on the old forum. IIRC there was no clear conclusion on which cars had it and which didn't. I certainly know that my previous car (Sept 04 build) had no sunroof but no suglasses holder - it was a syou describe yours. There was a train of thought that if you have the bluetooth and hands free that the microphone is in that area and prevented fitting the sunglasses holder as well.

Well thanks for your speedy responses

I don't have blu tooth (well either that or someone took the bits out of the boot). Maybe it didn't fit anything sizeable but I like flip down things and if I don't have it I want it....within reason :D even if it's pointless

If I could find the realoem part no I could start to have a poke around....wonder what's behind the grill panel (about 4"*4" ish), it looks like it might flick out....I think. The mic bits/covers are nearer the window so it's not that

from your replies I'm guessing that it covers the alarm?

Do you mean this? If so, I can find some time this week to get it open and find a part number (if there is one)? Let me know...

Mine has a false button and that panel has slots in it :?

my panel hides none moveable gubbins perhaps
false button can't be made into button

It's a rather sad story to do with domain registration.

Can't find the post AW8 wrote up about the old forum. We had one, it was great and then died suddenly and between 2 old members (AW8 and PVR) and an admin (sp3ctre) this forum was bought to life. Old forum domain name expired and was then bought out, old admin didn't have the commitment (or other reasons)...

what a shame....the material that's aquired is often irreplaceable.....I know that from when I pulled my E36 compact apart

ps I keep looking at that panel picture with gadget envy....is that sad :D

I'm warming up the dremel now to cut out the false button
