I have the CIC iDrive system, a Nokia Lumia work phone and a personal iPhone 6.  Both paired to the car.
When I receive a text message on the Nokia, the radio mutes and speaks the message through the car.  I think this is controlled by Cortana. It then asks if I want to reply or ignore the message at which point it recognises my voice command. The problem is with the iPhone in that it won't do the same.  Does anyone know if it's to do with the iPhone or the CIC firmware which aren't compatible?  I'd have thought Apple would be pretty advanced with this or possibly BMW not allowing this function with the iPhone.

Hi Jeff,

I bought a friend of mine a smart watch last week and the annoying thing is that most apps, replying to messages and making calls were not supported by his IPhone 6.
My Samsung Galaxy S4 Android was compatible with everything the Smart Watch had to offer.

So I'm going to assume it is the Apple product is what is stopping these features operating in your BMW.

Apple doesn't have that feature to automatically read out texts.

However, i'm sure that if you summon Siri, you can ask her if you have any new texts and ask her to read it out for you.

However, this is all down to the phones' softwares and not the car.


If you had a later version of the NBT navigation system, you could summon Siri by long-pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel (hold it down for a few seconds until you get "EXTERNAL DIALOGUE" up on your iDrive screen). If your car was produced in 2013 and has NBT, you won't have this feature, however it can be coded via eSys

....That is provided that it is an F-series car, and not an E-series car. E-series didn't get NBT as far as I'm aware, and either way, E-series don't use eSys as its for F-series only.
