I have just bought a 2011 30d MSport and was told it is chipped.  How do I know if this is the case?  My main question is if it is chipped, how do I remove it??

Depends upon whether it's been remapped which will need specialist software to identify, or an add on 'chip' system has been plugged in.

If it's a remap then a BMW Dealer can reset it to the factory default.....and that often happens anyway when an official software update is carried out because the BMW servers spot the remap and over-write it.

Plug in modules will need hunting down and will depend upon exactly how it is connected.

I believe it is just a re-map, but I am still only getting 28-29mpg whereas my father who has the same X5 with the chips express is getting 36mpg.........

Unless you know someone who can revert you to the OEM map, then it's a Dealer job.

You could also send a PM to BWChiptune (Jason) on this site for advice.  He could provide you with a better map.. :)

Stick it on a rolling road and get it Dyno'd, surely?!?

At least that why, you have the info to decide if you want to keep the map on the car, or pay a dealer (or other tuner) to remove or map over it.
