That sounds fairly cheap for a rebuild.. I always heard it was around the 2.5k mark.

I also have the 2001 4.4 and fear the gear box going.. due to the value of car etc i'd be tempted to trade in the X5 at garage and hope it goes unnoticed during inspection..

I know its not nicest thing to do and very underhanded but safes you a big bill.. don't most garages have insurances as well if they except a trade like this?

I would change that oil one more time  if this was  first time in car history, my mate have  a 4.4 7 series on 03 with 126k on the clock and he changed gearbox  first time in car history cause same issue what you have. He did it 3 times before it started run smoothly again! Apparently torque converter and all the other parts build up so much contamination that it needs actually flush through with TransServe machine to get it cleaned first! Now 8 months no issues! Maybe worth of trying if it makes sense for you! Do you research and ask about flushing through!
