Inconsistent running

My 4.8 e53 runs great then it lacks power and the exhaust note changes.its as if something is not opening.I had the valvetronics tested and Alls good. No fault codes. It clears itself after a few days and all is good again. Could it be a faulty Vanos solenoid? Cheers.
