Does the E70 rear wiper arm just bolt on to an E53 without any modification needed then?
Is the blade size the same too?

Did mine this weekend - the replacement works far better than the OEM one although it feels very light and plasticky compared to the heavy duty metal OEM one.

On my E53 X5 the original rear wiper don't even touch the rear glass properly and is not really clearing any water on the screen.
If I changed it to the e70 type will I get a better fitting and a wiper that actually wipes the water?
Cheers guys. O:-)

That's exactly what mine was doing -useless it was! The new one is spot on, works perfectly and took minutes to install.

That's normally solved by cleaning and lubircating the main arm joint. They get dry and corroded stopping the pressure from the spring. I cleaned mine with WD40 then greased it and it's been fine since. I also replaced the blade rubber.

I must say, no amount of cleaning or replacing the wiper blade worked on mine, I think over the years, there had been some distortion, however minimal, meaning the contact with the screen was inconsistent. I had tried lubricating and cleaning before, but gave up in the end - the new one has a very slim, uncluttered appearance, not as bulky as the OEM one and it just works. I kept my old one, but it does have a rather battered appearance after 10 years on the rear!

I agree with the above. I swapped mine for one similiar to the OP...and it works and looks good too. A picture is emerging though that these new ones are "generic" with only the blade length the discernable difference...at least to my eyes. Not sure what I'd do for a new blade, perhaps the whole new arm has become throwaway although they are supplied in two parts. They are all it seems un splined to but being "soft" the taper bites onto the spline of the X5
Anways...looks good and works good

You've answered the question I was about to ask.
Mine arrived today and on fitting I noticed there were no splines.
I wondered if I had a duff one but thought I'd fit it anyway and when testing it seemed to grip well to the splines with no slipping.
As you mentioned the metal collar must be soft enough to grip the splines on the motor shaft.
Very pleased with the result for the cost, although because the wiper is actually designed for the E70 where the arm is mounted on the right hand side fitting it to the E53 on the left means the arm doesn't sit as low as it could otherwise - See photo.

My E70 blade is clearing the screen perfectly! Worth the swap!
