2002 4.4i owner here.
I use Mobil1 0w40 BMW LL01 spec
I have used this oil in my car for 9 years of ownership (owned since 2006 @ 59k miles and now done 139k miles)
Rocker gaskets where replaced circa 75-80k miles. Without looking at all invoices (I have every one from brand new) I cannot be sure what oil the main dealers put in it prior to my ownership.
I am aware that Mobil1 isn't cheap and some regard it a little thing for their licking. Personally I have high regard for the product and based on claimed engine strip downs with negligible wear on E30 3 series in 1990's.
Curious as to reasoning behind the query.
Not many M62 4.4i owners on here who have owned for significant mileage and used one oil type so you may struggle to get meaningful number of replies and meaningful feedback on this.

Sorry to hear of this - sadly might be the case someone got rid rather than pay to sort a developing issue. Unlikely to be a cheap fix.
Fwiw I see lots of posts on forums re Oil brands & specs but less discussion re the importance of maintaining & checking correct oil levels.

Sorry to hear of your predicament, it's an awful situation to be in, and ruins the joy of buying what was probably a much desired model of car that you've wanted for years.
I've recently purchased a different motor and I'm always nervous for the first few weeks , wondering have I inherited someone else's cast off.
