Give the car a wash using the two bucket method.  Basically use one to rinse sponge after wiping paintwork preventing contamination of the soapy water with dirt.

Remove any tar spots using tar remover if necessary
Use a clay bar product (Google if not familiar) this will give good results on an old car
Use a cleanser product
Finally wax the car.

This is a full days work but trust me when done properly will last and well worth it.  There are all sorts of products to choose from and I wont enter that minefield.  I will however say that I splashed out on Autoglym High Definition wax which isn't cheap but very good and worth the money.

Take a look at one of the many car detailing forums.

If you search on here, myself and others have posted significant content on this before. The advice to wash properly is a good start point & one so often overlooked.

Twin buckets as said & ideally a soft wash mitt. If it's down to a solo bucket & sponge then ideally hose or pressure wash 1st or at least change water frequently. Try to avoid causing abrasions or smears....cheap sponges, muddy water and slimy chamois leathers, Lint cloths. Also avoid washing panels from sills upwards - all best avoided. Microfibe Drying towels really help.

If I could only use one paintwork treatment product it would be Autoglym super resin polish as even when used by hand it can remove surface contamination & debris (not as well as clay bar) has some capability of correction , can also do some minor filling & also importantly seals. It can be used on the paintwork, (which is actually clearcoat) alloys & roof rails but keep it off rubber or plastic trim. Versatile and works ok in various temperatures.
