Hi guys, newbie here got some issues with the 'X' - not had it long, EML light came on and diagnosis shows the following codes...




I noticed its struggles to get over 2k rpm but then after that it seems fine,

I'm not sure what the fault could be as Iv read that the cause could be something else not what shows up on the scanner.

Any ideas guys?? Please help

Looks like all of your glow plugs might be shot - not an issue at this time of year but will make starting a challenge in cold weather, you appear to have a MAF fault - which will almost certainly affect the engine performance, and the EGR has been either disabled deliberately or has failed (and been disabled)?

The undocumented code could be as a result of the previous keeper or dealer playing?

Iv read on other posts about the glow plug controller sometimes being at fault, is there a way to confirm this?

With regards to the MAF is there a way of checking if it's working?

Because like I said at under 2/2500rpm it takes a while to build up speed.

Not sure if the egr has been deleted or blanked etc, I just had a local garage scan for faults when I got the symptoms

I just didn't fancy spending money on parts that are not required, as many people say that a lot of garages just replace what's on the scanning machine but that's not always a fix

I don't think there is an easy way to check the MAF yourself as it needs specialised test kit.

The glow plug controller could be the issue and it should be possible to check the plugs themselves with a meter.  There should be some resistance measurable.

Another thing worth checking is that the vacuum hoses are all connected up on the left side of the engine.  It is not unknown for the turbo vac control one to get left off during servicing.  That can cause a loss of boost.  It's connected to a small grey plastic 'tank' just in front of the left side (looking into the engine bay) suspension turret.  Worth tracing it.  Also check whether your crankcase breather has been replaced.  The early version (fitted well into 2004) was a foam 'bog roll' design which clogs.  The later version - and still used - is a 'vortex' type that should not ever need replacement.  A blocked foam type can lead to premature turbo failure and is an easy diy for less than £50 OEM parts.

Missed it's an E70.  Foam bog roll should not be fitted in that case.  Too new.  Vacuum hoses definitely want looking at.

In that case it is very likely either a Cat/DPF issue (sooted up/failed/failing) or a sensor failure in the exhaust stream which is telling the DDE (ECU for Diesel engines) there is something wrong and it cuts the power.  Could be a bad injector too.

DPF's were fitted from 2007 and depending upon mileage/driving pattern since new, it may be at end of life - but go with a sensor issue initially as it's cheaper!

Probably worth getting a fault/error code scan done to see what throws up.

Quick update...

Just had all glowplugs changed along with a genuine bmw glow plug relay/controller...

Egr cleaned and a full service.

Car was fine couple days but today it's thrown up the EML and error message says "Increased Emissions"

Had it plugged it and it showed same faults - glowplugs / DPF / egr...!! WTF??!

And one fault that says undocumented code?

Mind boggling-any advice guys??

Now code reader shows the following faults... Any idea what it could be?

Your best Googling the fault code, loads of info, several Beemers suffered with this code. Possible vacuum leak or vac unit , pump, clogged and sticky EGR VALVE ETC
