I took the top engine cover off today for a look (2003 4.4) and found a rubber hose with a rather large hole in it...
It is one of 2 hoses that go across the back of the engine- i think they are crankcase breather pipes- but not sure.
They are really soft, almost melted rubber. Anyone know what they are for? I have had the EML coming on and my C110 tells me it is bank 2 mixture limit exceeded or something like that. Could i have found the fault?

Ive put some duct tape around it for the time being until i can get some new hoses. What i want to know is how on earth do you get to the offside connections? Does the plastic bulk head below the fan filter come out?

While your there, you will want to replace the small hose that goes to the cyclone and give the cyclone itself a good clean out.

Yes I think I will. Drove from Cambridge to Heathrow last night and it certainly runs smoother even with it bodged up.. Managed 26mpg too which beats our old Cayenne- that thing stayed at 18mpg no matter how I drove it.
I also noticed steering wheel shake (only slightly) during heavy braking on the M25 so I may Polybush the thrust arms too.
Just a side note- how do you switch off TP or traffic announcing on the radio? I can shut it up by pressing the info button on the top right corner but its only temporary.

I called Elms BMW Cambourne to get a price for two breather pipies-£56. Hmm. So after extensive research I found two from a 4x4 parts dealer. £17. Thats better...
