I have a 2007 X3, I notice the newest X series vehicles have xdrive on the side.
What is the difference between the system on my vehicle and the system on the new vehicles?

It's just a marketing trick with car labelling from 2010 onwards.
Basically the same system underneath with minor hardware changes - newer Xdrive unit perhaps - but otherwise exactly the same way of working as far as driver experience.
