Evening all,

So.... After the 5 decided to go into trams fail safe mode I became aware of the horror stories behind the amount of issues with the auto transmission..

After driving in D the car will sometimes Rev a little to around 3k rpm before dropping into 2nd gear and then continue as normal but occasionally it doesn't seem to want to select 2nd at all and goes into fail safe and I think drops into 4th.... After restarting the car it clears.
It was gradually getting worse so I decided to speak to a transmission repair place in Luton who advised me to at least change the oil and filter and get the codes read. It's done 120k miles so. I read the codes and had code 52 gear monitoring 2 as the only fault code stored. I cleared this but it still kept happening. I changed the fluid and filter in the transmission checked for leaks topped up to correct level and off I went. So far so good for 2 days the gears were so much smoother the ride was much improved. But then today it came back !!!!!! So it appears to have improved but not fixed the issue. Any ideas as to what exactly the fault code relates too??

52 gear monitoring 2.

Thanks in advance.

It's an internal gearbox warning message and from what is available on the web, not likely to be good news.  Could be a clutch failing to hold correctly.

Gear monitoring is checking for excessive slip in the box.
It's measuring the engine speed (for torque calcs), turbine speed (inner 'fan' of torque converter) and the output speed.
If it sees a difference in turbine and ouput speeds (and the fiddle factor for which gear it was in at the time) then deduces slippage which it isn't expecting to see.....

Could be clutch packs, clutch piston, but more than likely some wear n the valve block not applying pressure correctly...
