Hello
I've just got a 2002 X5 4.4 in black, had it about a week now and love it , a few annoying little issues but what can you expect from a 13 year old car!!

Had a V8 jeep grand cherokee before this but just fancied a change, now the jeep seems old and dated lol but only a years difference in age.

Hopefully I can sort the issues will post them on the problem bit and can maybe lead in right direction,

Cheers

Welcome to the site.

I also run a 2002 X5 4.4i and have done so for 9 years.......Unsure if this is a positive testimony to the car or indicative of my insanity - anyway I hope you look after it, treat it with some respect &/or at least keep it more than 5 mins.

Happy to assist re any issues or likely future events (subject to my memory)

Good Luck :)

I hope you have as much fun as I have with mine, 2002 4.4.
Had it 9 years, still love it.

If memory serves me correctly it's myself Lez  & sapphireblack who have been in for the long haul with  our pre facelift 4.4i's.

If anyone else can claim 9 years or more in a V8 E53 please declare your bravery or stupidity here ;)

I dont need prompting more than that......

Firstly dont worry re what follows - all or most may not currently apply to your vehicle !

On a prefacelift V8 the sensible checks I would make might include.....

Examine visible belts & hoses, keep regular check on coolant levels,  check for  expansion tank and bleed screw integrity on top of  same plus keep eye out for any early water pump leaks (not common but these can be expected to need changing by 100-120k), If plugs have been in more than 5 years at least remove and carefully clean the threads maybe using a very little graphite grease to same (they can seize- especially if water has got in there at some point).

Get engine cover off & check PVC hose integrity (rubber hoses across top and rear of engine). Look for signs if recent  and significant rocker gasket leaks. Keep eye on pas high pressure hose. Keep eye on fluid levels including engine oil & get it changed unless you can be satisfied it was last serviced by someone sensible.

Oh & try to be nice to the gearbox - kickdown arguably places some additional strain on box - especially  if executed prior to vehicle being warmed up. Worth checking gasket to auto box sump for signs of leaks too.

If you have a partner they may not be too excited to learn of my car health check tips -  disclosure of above at your risk.

Hope some of above helps. Apologies if some of above is common sense stuff, does not apply to you and/or your car.

:)
