Security recall

Post by pvr » Tue Jun 30, 2015 12:07 pm

Got that one today now, seems a bit random compared to others.

All day programming though so they say.

Heard its to do with the CAS module needing updating due to the "bad boys" finding another security breach possible through BMW's so called security!

Perhaps they can update my satnav maps whilst they are at it as the system still does not know the Eurotunnel exists unless you are in it.

Even my E53 was fine with that, and the Porsche also auto routed on that one yesterday.

I had the call a few days ago - going in on Monday next - they want it for 8 hours.  When it was updated a couple of years ago after the last hiatus over security they wanted it for 8 hours and it took 20 minutes!!!

My satnav is on 2008 DVD.  Can't see them updating it or a hard drive version for nothing!!!

what typ of recall is it? I called coopers bmw who said it was a software enhancement and there was no risk of theft to the vehicle.

should i get the sofware update ASAP rather than in a months time when a loan car is available?

They were telling me it was a security update only.

I doubt Bmw would admit there's a problem again regards to security and gave the recall a name that wouldn't get Bmw owners rushing to the stealers at once.

today I called :

1. coopers thames ditton who said it was a security enhancement and there is currently no risk of theft to the vehicle.

2. Bmw uk who admitted it was a security risk hence the need for update.

3. Bmw park lane who said it was a security risk and update could take either 15min or 15 hrs so i reuqested a loan car for 2 days. (Booked with them for end of month).

I am still unclear who should contact me in the event of an urgent software update - bmw uk must have email and contact details of owners so why do so - it must be quicker than calling thousands of customers!??

I had a call from my Dealer about it.  If the current owner's details are known to BMW then you should get a call.  It isn't a 'safety' recall so isn't on the DVSA website.

I think it only affects cars made before September 2011.  BMW changed the system architecture at that point.

It is about theft prevention measures...but that's all I can get out of my dealer.  The patch done two years or so ago has obviously been got around so this will be the next update.  It's a constant war between the haves and have nots and there will never be a completely perfect way to lock things down.  That is inevitable with software controlled cars, a less than perfect OBDII spec requirements list and thieves who spend their lives finding ways around controls.

It's no different than what goes on every hour in computer land and our cars have a lot of computers!  Whenever there needs to be a way to access things for maintenance purposes there is a gap in the fence.  BMW along with every other car manufacturer making use of advanced computer based tech can only do so much, and at least they are doing something.

We might not like it but it is the way of the world we now live in, and very profitable for those on the 'dark' side of life.

I've not heard anything from BMW but then I've only had my 2011 X6 about 6weeks - better give the local stealer a call.
Cheers
Phil.

Call the stealers today and this is how it went;

Afternoon,I'm ringing about the software update on my car.

Service lady ; what service update?

The update regarding the security of my car!

Service lady; what car do you have?

An E70 do you want my reg. number to confirm status?

Service lady; oh alright then can I have it?

Service lady; yes it was in May yours is due now!

So why weren't I contacted either via post or phone as some people were?

Service lady; it's not a recall so no need to contact owners, only needs doing when car is in for work and it's a software enhancement rather than security issue!

I've heard it's to plug a loophole in the security regarding thefts from programming new keys via OBD that has been compromised again by theives again.

Service lady; Yes it's to sort that problem out.

I hear that you may need my car for at least 12 hrs?

Service lady; yes that's true would you like to book it in?

Will you simply me a courtesy car for the work?

Service lady; yes but it will cost £10 for admin charge.

I'll call you when I'm ready thanks!

Well let's say that the stealers weren't very knowledgeable and some of you have already been phoned about this update proves it could be hit and miss for some!
Might ring BMW HQ to find out the truth behind this software enhancement update.
