Could be the transfer case actuator. Search bmw x3 trifecta or triad warning lights. Might not be though.

When does it stall? Just after start, when engine is warm etc?

Hi and welcome to the forum
I've read several threads over on BMWLAND , when it was still on line regarding the X3' jumping and the 4x4 light coming on, most were due to mismatched tyres / rolling curcumferancs between the front and rear wheels when running the staggered wheel set up. The X3's are very sensitive to different tyre sizes if not Star marked tyres.
Have you got the same size / profile tyres on or the staggered setup?

A 5-wheel RRS?  Special option?
