X6 3 or 3.5 litre help

Hi Guys,

So I am making the big plunge from being a 330 driver for over 8 years and going for my dream car! Have always wanted one since I saw them first back in 2008 but I am looking at BMW Approved and want either a 3 or 3.5 litre diesel automatic.

I would prefer the 3 litre which has 38mpg average over the 3.5 which is 34mpg but my question is the 3 litre got enough oomph for this 2 tonne Batmobile?

Noticed it has 520 torque though which sounds awesome! I currently have a 330 m sport petrol auto which is around 320 torque I think so hoping it wont be slower maybe even slighther faster?

Cheers Guys responses appreciated :)

Taz

The 3.0d is a 3 litre single turbo and the 35d/40d is a 3 litre twin turbo, either variant will feel more peppy low down despite the weight compared to a 330 petrol as the torque comes in nice and low whereas the 330i needs lots of revs for it to get a shift on.

The 3 litre twin turbo is more lag free compared to the single turbo set up and for me if you can afford the 35d/40d that is the one to go for.

Ah the naivety eh? :) Cool so its just on the turbos appose to litre size. I must admit I am feeling the need for a twin turbo lol but the sensible side in me is saying for for the single! Argh no closer haha! Can anyone who has experience owning one (or both) try to sway me either way?  ::)

I am sure the guys that have owned them will be along soon, I have had the 3 litre single turbo engine in a E90 330d and it was a great engine but it suffered with a fair bit of turbo lag and it returned around 43 mpg in that.

Currently got the 3 litre twin turbo engine in a 640d and coupled to the 8 speed auto they make a very good partnership and that returns 42mpg, the X6 is obviously heavier but it will still shift with that engine in it and the twin turbo set up pretty much eliminates turbo lag.

For me it would be a no brainer to go for the X6 40d as the extra performance will come in handy for sure for bullying folk out of the way!!  ;)

Good lord !

The 40d is a 3ltr twin turbo :D

And before you ask , the 50d is also .... a 3ltr  :))

I'd definitely get the 40d if performance is your thing , by the sound of it though , if mpg is a concern , I think the x6 is the wrong car for you

Hi I have the 3.0d on a 61 plate. It is a great car and goes like stink when you put your foot down. If your looking at mpg expect around 32-36 depending on type of driving you do. I am averaging 34 mpg on trip at moment which seems fairly accurate. Great car though !!

Thanks Royal this is what I was looking for! I think it will be similar to my current 330 petrol which also says it does around that mpg and to be honest i'm sure I will be happy with 'going like stink' as i'm getting it more for the comfort/luxury angle, the going fast thing is kinda secondary to me now (been there done it with M sport models and wanna put my feet up a bit now lol)

now next question..sapphire black or deep sea blue mwaaaaahah :)

No...that's not right the 40d is a 4 litre and the 50d is a 5 litre!!  :)) ;)

To be fair the latest 330i has a 2 litre four pot turbo in it so it does become pretty difficult to understand BMW`s fast and loose badging nowadays for sure, the fact that the 318i is a three pot beggars belief too!

It sounds like if there was a 690D it would still be a 3 litre  O:-)

BMW are going down the modular route of making each cylinder 500ccs (well slightly less) and this latest 318i one is 3 cylinders, so it 1.5 litres.  Confused.com  :o

Totally agree it is properly confusing.  :)
