Can't get in car

Hi all,
I've got a 2002 X5.
Was on the school run the other day and when I went to open the car with the fob it wouldn't unlock. I tried the key in the drivers side lock and the barrel just spins 90 degrees left and right without opening.
I've rang my local dealer and they've ordered me a new key and barrel for my lock.
Does anyone know how I can get in my car to start it and take it to the garage so they can reprogramme key?
if I smash the window and press the central locking button on the console will that open doors and allow me to put key in ignition and start it?
I've got break down cover but they said if they can't get into my car it will cost £200 for me to have it lifted onto a tow truck.

Only one key? Should have two.
I can't remember whether there is a key slot on the boot hatch. If not then you're going to need a professional, or a Dealer to come and open the car.

The central locking button inside can be coded to not work if the car is deadlocked with the key / fob..
If that has been done then smashing the window may not allow you to get in any better...
I am assuming you have tried several positions around the case to try to unlock it.
Is the car battery OK??
You should be able to turn the key past the unlock position to manually open the door. If that doesn't work then you also have a linkage problem.

Try keeping your finger on the open button for 10 seconds, all the windows should roll down. But as Steamyrotter says is the battery OK.have you left the lights on maybe ?
Hope you get it sorted without too much expense.

Did you get it sorted
I know how the AA got into mine when I locked the keys on the boot but for fairly obvious security reasons I'm not going to post it here
As mentioned if the windows should roll down if you hold the unlock button down
Let us know if it got sorted

No luck yet I'm afraid.
My new key has arrived from BMW but it won't work in the lock or by the fob.
I've got a BMW mechanic coming out tomorrow to drill the lock out and use a screwdriver to open the door, and once in programme my new key to work.
I pray to god this works as I've ran out of ideas and patience.
In the last 6 month I've had nightmare after nightmare with it, costing £2000 in repairs so far.

That sounds a bit drastic - there are ways to get into the car without causing any damage. Like Smeeagain I locked my keys in the boot and had to get BMW Emergency Services out to get me in - it took him about 10 minutes and didn't leave a mark

I've never heard of BMW emergency services, do you have a contact for them?
How much did that cost you?

It's a recovery type service that's part of the BMW new/approved car warranty - contact number is 0800 777111. Even if you don't have cover through the warranty it'd be worth giving them a call before you let someone loose with a screwdriver.

As stated above by many is your car battery okay or has it died, if your battery has died i am sure most on here including me will tell you how to get into your vehicle without destroying anything.

Well a new key isn't going to work in the lock is it until the old lock is taken out ?????
Why not just take up someone's offer and pm for the advice to gain access?
Don't let a guy loose with a drill on the lock - it will take him longer than accessing the car the way the AA do

BMW came out, ended up smashing window and reprogramming the new key using ignition. Then had to change lock on door.
Ended up with a bill of £500.
