Software Total Failure

Post by PioneerSSM » Fri Jun 05, 2015 10:06 pm

Hi All
Just want to run this by you all, I've looked on here for mentions of this occurrence and have found none specifically regarding this event.

Car was in MD for a auto wiper sensor failure/rectify fault, and a once only not been repeated, failure of all front windows operation.
MD informed me that whilst updating the software, a complete failure had occurred resulting in a blank idrive screen etc. As such I had to leave the car overnight and it was delivered to next day.

All seems well, and as such Ive no complaints.

It just seems to me very strange that this topic isn't mentioned.

Has anyone else heard of or suffered this, and if so what were?are the repercussions?

As with any software patching, if it goes wrong it will 'brick' the computer (well known if any issues occurred on the old Mk4 Nav Computer) and the only way around it is to rebuild the hard drive and any erasable ROM in the iDrive.

If it did 'brick' the drive then they would have just reformatted the drive and pulled your software 'build image' off the BMW Servers as there is a central record of your car, its licence keys and build option keys.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
