BMW X5 40d M Sport 2012 Wheel Change Question

Hi,
I just today collected an X5 40d M Sport on a 62 plate.
I think I am going to purchase a second set of wheels and winter tyres probably off fleabay. A winter tyre package from BMW seems extortionate and not really worth spending £k's on wheels that are gonna get grubby with the winter conditions.
As part of the handover I asked about swopping the wheels and I was advised to bring the car in and they can swop wheels over and set up the TPMS.
My question is can I not just go to a tyre shop get them to swop them, rest the TPMS and away I go?
Also, do I need to ensure the wheels have special valves in order for it to work?
Thanks in advance,
Damian.

The TPMS is on the ABS, not via sensors in the wheels. Are you sure you have special valves because all you should need to do is push a button on the dash?
Only the V8 petrol cars had TPMS valves in the wheels.

My car is a 2007 E70 3.0d. I've had a set of winter wheels for 2 years now (that's why it hasn't snowed!) Whenever I get the wheels changed back and forwards it's done either when its serviced at an indy, or I take it to the local National Tyres depot and they swap them straight away and torque the nuts. Afterwards I reset the monitor, which is easy to do - read the manual then go into the service menu and follow the instructions on the screen.
The tyre valves are "normal" - nothing different about them at all.
Hope this helps,
Graeme

Swap my 2012 40d every winter as well, nothing to be done. Just swap and drive, no resets etc.

Don't you get a free safety check? I do - takes 90 mins and they run a daily checker over the systems and look for any warnings as well as a condition check underneath.
But I've never had anything done with the TPMS either. Sounds like an incompetent, or rip off merchant of a dealer >:(

As said, TPMS is set through I Drive. I also bought a set of winters and never saw a flake, typical ! Guarantee the minute I sell them, there'll be an avalanche

I swap over every winter too. I have a set of X6 wheels (rears were bored to fit X5) with Vredestien winter tyres and have no issues swapping them over. I never touch the pressure warning , it must sort things out automatically.
I've driven through a lot of deep snow in the Alps and the car has performed flawlessly each time (even with 3 winters, plus one worn summer, That's another story though!)

I have a nice set of winter tyres and wheels in the for sale section , they made driving my e70 40d incredible fun in the snow
Very cheap indeed - why spend more for something that'll only be on the car around 12 weeks a year !
Ps - if you are changing wheels yourself and you have 20's watch your back they are HEAVY !!!
