I just did a software update on my 40d and noticed that only the phone version was updated. My multimedia version is unchanged at 002.005.025
It's the first update I've done in 11 months so I'm surprised the multimedia version didn't get updated. I was hoping that the car would recognise newer music CDs after the upgrade. As it is, only CDs released before 2013 or so are recognised by the car. New CDs all show up as UNKNOWN ARTIST.
I got the update file by entering my VIN at http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/connec ... pdate.html
Hey wait, that link says bluetooth software. Maybe I just answered my own question.
The hotline in Germany is open today so I'll give them a call and report back to the list.

OK, the hotline in Munich says the phone update also covers MM. Hmmm, I'll try reading in a new CD and see if it's recognised now.

Tried a new CD, no joy. I'll Google this a not more when back home.

Re: Software update done, but only phone?
It might be the CIC system and the Combox version itself that is the issue and the firmware update did not address the issue - as often happens with BMW due to frequent hardware changes!

Re: Software update done, but only phone?
I do have the combox option, which I'm told was rare in 2011, but I'm not familiar with CIC. What's that?

Re: Software update done, but only phone?
Comboxes became a standard fit in the middle of 'model year 2011' - around Oct 2010 onwards. My E71 was built the first week they went into that model as long as you had pro-Nav + Bluetooth.
The CIC is the Central Infotainment Computer.....or iDrive with the 7 button multifunction controller.... which also came with the LCI E70.
The Combox was supposed to be fully upgradeable by software patches but the truth is very different and as with the earlier Bluetooth TCU/ULF units there are multiple versions, a new one being issued every few months. I was told the current F15/16 have the next generation iDrive system which has no Combox.

Re: Software update done, but only phone?
I'm googling this issue a bit today and found the release notes for this software update. File name: UPD01008.bin
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1064602 listed it and links to the BMW update site I used.
Unfortunately, the release notes are silent on the issue I want to address: all new CDs are not recognised by CIC.
I will call the BMW hotline in Munich again.

Re: Software update done, but only phone?
Bad news from Munich. They only support ConnectedDrive. So they can't help me with the multimedia software update.
If I wanted to use ConnectedDrive, I would have to buy a year of that service from BMW France. But in typical French fashion, BMW France already proved themselves difficult to work with, so I dropped that idea a few months ago. I would need a German mailing address to register with BMW Deutschland (who are polite, and speak English, unlike the French).
So far, no solution to getting my car to recognise new music CDs...
