I recently fitted an e39 climate control unit into my x5. Reason for this was the pixels had gone on my original one. I was delighted initially with the new unit with the little screen being clear as a bell. In time however, I realised that the commands were not being followed as before. For example, the button for the windscreen actually blows air into you face. The max button does not appear to do anything.
Having looked at other units is it possible this e39 (came with no buttons) is the unit that has rest instead of max at the bottom?
If it is, this leads to my question, if I was to source an e39 with the max button, will the other buttons work as they should. Ie would the unit from the e39 be directly compatible with my e53 x5.
Thanks, Chris.

Re: E39 climate control unit compatibility with x5.
According to RealOEM the controllers in the E53 are only used in that car which would tend to suggest that one out of an E39 has subtle differences in its build that put functions on different switches as you found and won't fully work.
If you know the part number, try putting it into RealOEM to see what other vehicles the panel you have will work with. Might give you a pointer or two.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
