Hi,

How hard is it to convert the wing mirrors to folding option on my wife's X5 Sports exclusive 3.0D.

Cheers,

Pete

Pretty much impossible, as X5s don't have wing mirrors!

If you're on about door mirrors, then more than likely replacement mirror units would be required, and the switch unit in the driver's door. That's assuming the wiring loom is complete, not sure if BMW fit the complete loom to all variants. If your mirrors fold manually already, then the internals may have the mountings etc for the drive motors and cogs, which you can buy as a repair kit from ebay.
Not going to be a cheap project methinks, whichever way you go...

I think that you may struggle to find the necessary internal parts so as above new mirror units will be required (along with switchgear/loom perhaps).

New units are ridiculously expensive so looking on your favourite auction site, or on a used parts supplier may be a better option.  The folding mechanisms are a known weak spot on the E53 so bear in mind should you want to go ahead and go down the used path.  The microswitches fail regularly.

Have a look on RealOEM for the relevant parts and part numbers.  For new parts don't expect any change out of £1k.

Remember to test BOTH mirrors when you buy them. A faulty microswitch in any 1 will cause both to close  .... I think....

Thanks all, just an idea i was toying with.
Having more of an issue trying to get the bluetooth working as the code is missing on the bluetooth unit. Trying to get in touch with previous  owner to get the code. Called into knights beemer garage and was told the samsung s4 was incompatible  with the car. So may just get a parrot installed instead. Kind of hacked off with the wife whinging about bluetooth not working.
never had this issue with the audis. Very Strange . :(

You can get the code from it using something like INPA

If there is someone near you with it then it is a piece of cake..

I use the 1st gen ULF (Bluetooth module) in mine and i have yet to find a phone it wont work with on bluetooth!!

Its possible the bluetooth code is on a sticker on the bluetooth module in the boot.

INPA is a diagnostic software for BMW.

Its funny, went to the BM garage and spoke with some guy in service and his answer was the phone is too new, for the car to accept it??
Went back up to Scotland (Work) and took the Bluetooth unit out and had a look for the 4 digit code, both stickers were missing.
Maybe its time to get rid of the new phones and go back old school with nokia`s. ha-ha.
Have a feeling that the Bluetooth unit has stopped working, will investigate a little more when back on dry land.
May just take it to one of the independent garages up in Aberdeenshire when I get back.
But thanks for your inputs, most enlightening.

The phone should work as most, if not all, mainstream manufacturers keep their kit backwards compatible.

You may only get limited functionality and no phone book download, but the calls should work.

If the Bluetooth module is the original one then any BMW dealer will get the pairing number from the car build record.

BMW made a real mess of their early Bluetooth adoption and there are about 14 versions of the module on the E53!!!!  Sometimes they were upgraded several times in the same year.

Once you get the PIN you may find that you need to clear down all of the existing pairings to give you space to add one more.

Have been informed by one of the fellas that their is a good independent garage at Insch Aberdeenshire. Will give them a call on Thursday when back. Must admit I like the X5 and pleasantly surprised how quick it is. Im allowed to drive it now and again.
Have put the idea on the original post in the (not going to bother bin) Lol.
Have read some interesting post on Xdrivers, a lot of switched on guys and gals.
Pleasure as always.
