Hi all, have my 2008 3.0 sd now about 6 months, bought in a private sale and have 7000 miles on it since buying. The engine misbehaved and now I need a new one.
Both timing chains are broken, I have no compression in 3 cylinders due to bent valves, camshaft cap bolts have broken, camshafts had heavy impact, rocker arms are bent, the oil pump has siezed and the number1 bearing on the crank is loosing white metal.
The engine is a 306d5, does anyone know if one from a 335d or 535d will fit or is it a jeep only engine?
Also any idea where to find one of these hens teeth?

Jeez.....how did that happen?  What mileage on it before it self destructed?

A BMW specialist breaker is going to be the only likely source unless one comes up on an auction site.  There are differences between the 335d/535d engines but those may be in the ECU/DDE rather than the actual lump so you nay be able to move all the accessories, electronics, lines etc from yours over and bolt them on. 

Injectors might have a subtle difference as will the inlet, exhaust and turbo manifolds which means you may be best buying a 'short' engine assuming you can find one.

One if the BMW Mechs on here will know for sure.

102000 miles on her, think it was just pure bad luck for me, I think it began with the oil pump or chain driving it breaking which then broke the main chain.
When I search realoem the block part numbers can vary which makes me think it's more than injectors etc that are different, just need a bit more research done yet.

Give Jason a call at bmw chipotle, he knows his x5's and will tell what's possible and where to source a replacement, I've never heard of the chains going before, feel for you.

That's unfortunate, it's rare for this to happen on these engines, for a replacement have a look at eBay also, there's a site I came across and have used before which I'm sorry I can't remember the name of, but a search on Google will find, you tell them what you're looking for and very quickly you'll get a response from many different car breakers who have the part (engine) you need and who subscribe to the site, I was looking for a window motor and within 1 day I had around 5 replies from different breakers.

Have you had any prices for a rebuild, ( you can get a good discount on parts from Cotswold bmw through this site ), depending on whether you intend to keep the car this might be the way to go.
Buying second hand is always a risk, and you still have to have it fitted.

I have tinkered with a few things in my time inc many engine rebuilds... (Hobby wise not professional)

You buy the bits and I'll do the work for you.....

is there a recommended mileage to consider changing the chain - I think not but just wanted to check?

Only ever seen it referred to as being suggested if the tensioners go weak.

I hope I don't need to do it on the X6 as I believe the chains are now right at the back of the engine.
