Richard, how easy is it to upgrade from 2011 to 2014 maps?

Very easy. It takes several hours. You have to get a map set from BMW (3 DVDs @ £25) and a licence key - that's the expensive bit @ £180! - and then load them one at a time. If you are going to load them in one go you need to connect the car to a decent charger or you get a flat battery in about 30 mins, and the loading takes 2-3 hours and you have to keep waking the car up every 15 minutes or so!
Once loaded, the system then configures the new database whilst retaining the old one so you can still use the car. The database takes several hours to sort itself out and then the CIC reboots and away you go. This is why there is an 85GB hard drive of which only a few GB are available for music etc. The rest is to allow the mapping system to sort itself out and run two copies during the update process.
You can update the DVDs whilst driving too, but it still takes 2-3 hours which is why I did mine at home with a 10A charger connected.
Or you can get the Dealer to do it for an extra £100 labour!! >:(

Theres the glovebox usb method to update maps which is much quicker also using 3 USB and the end you input the license key to activate.

I assume I can also use Micro SD Cards using a USB adaptor or does it have to be actual USB sticks?
