Rough cold start & sometimes stalls

Evening all,
Some advice if you may please?
Early 2011 40d X5 sport 59k miles. My car seems to have a problem cold starting, it fires up well runs for a few seconds then develops rough idle (kind of like is misfiring or running 3 cylinders), it then either stalls or clears itself. If stall it can take a few starts to sort itself. It appears to be worse the colder it gets, but waiting for better weather before confirming.
Any ideas would be gravely appreciated.

Could be problems with the Glowplugs causing the engine to not start on all six, or a fuelling problem.
Anything showing on the 'Check Control' on your iDrive?
You might need to visit your nearest dealer or specialist who can run diagnostics on it and see what has been recorded.
Oh and

I second the glow plugs.
I had a similar problem with my car, 08 plate 35D.
Thinking it was because of the colder weather.
But after a visit to my indie of choice it now has 6 new glowplugs and is in rude health...
The glow plugs are also need to be working for a correct regen of the dpf.
As they are part of the regen process..
So well worth getting them checked out....
Oh ,it cost me around £300 for all six fitted...

Cheers guys,
I thought about glow plugs, but the car fires first time and runs for a few seconds before the problem starts. My second thought was a sticky EGR. What you guys think?
I have had a diagnostic check done with no results

Get the car diagnosed, if the glow plugs are at fault it will be logged, many garages use diagnostics such as autologic. You can purchase new bosh items on eBay for £30 for all six, labour should be no more than £150.

I'm with glowplug controller.
Had a very similar thing happen with my 40d with 47k on the clock. It ended up being a double-whammy of glowplug controller being goosed but in order to get to it the manifold had to be removed and was found to be completely coked up.
Thankfully mondial replaced it under extended warranty and didn't have any issues at all thereafter.
