Are plastic

Good info here:-

http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/pages/blanking-pates
Some BMs registered upto 09/10 have been effected.... I would get someone to check things like:-
A) do you have them
B) have they been done already
C) what size are they
If not, buy both the 22mm and 32mm options just in case, and return the ones you dont use.
If unsure, always best to check & prevent

incorrect. Always been plastic, its the metal spindle pin that fails, and gets ingested etc. They beefed up the pin on a design change but still I dont trust them, mine are out on my 57' X5

Hi Russ, it's my understanding that all BMW engines around 2009 stopped using swirl flaps.
I know that the E53 X5 didn't have swirl flaps on the facelift models which I think came out in 2005, I can't believe why the E70 would then have them, I would imagine they wouldn't so before you go buying blanking plates check to see of you've actually got them, there's loads of information available about how to check, so goggle might help you there.

Incorrect, mid 2009 they changed the inlet manifold design and moved them further back, still have swirl flaps just a much better design.
And e70 X5's 100% have swirl flaps. Read my post above, I took them out, Im pretty sure I did not dream it [emoji1]

Definitely got them on my 2011 X6 40d. The clue being the manifold parts state 'with flap control'.

Sorry, I clearly stand corrected!
Can't imagine why they would re-introduce a part which caused engines to self destruct ... Given the history of the part. Though no doubt it happens after warranty

It's all to do with emissions. The tighter the limits, the more of these spawn of satan get used - and not just by BMW. >:(
