Do not attempt to clean your MAP sensor

Post by jagr » Wed Feb 25, 2015 12:05 am

Hi All,

In the last 18 months I have changed or had changed for preventative maintenance:

Fuel filter
Air filter
Oil separator from toilet roll to vortex
Oil and filter
Pollen filter
EGR thermostat
Main thermostat
Transfer case oil

Removed:

Swirl flaps

Cleaned:

EGR
Inlet manifold

I decided to remove my MAP sensor and give it a clean. Once removed it was full of oil etc.
I cleaned out with carb cleaner and a needle and left it to dry.

Around an hour later I put the car back together and noticed there was no power, felt like a diesel from the 80s.
I plugged my BMW scanner 110 in and it said '3f01 Boost Pressure Sensor - Signal'

I double checked everything in case a pipe etc was left off but nothing.

Looked the fault code up and most said it was usually the MAP sensor.

Today I phoned my local dealers expecting £40-50 but had to pay £103 for a new one.

All fitted and car runs great with no errors.

Expensive lesson.........As they say if it ain't broke.....

No, it is the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor.
On my X3 it is at the back of the engine attached to the inlet manifold.

This is my old one:
