Accessing the starter 2004 E53 3.0D Auto

Is it easy to locate/access the starter without putting it up on a ramp?
Not without stripping a lot out first.
And then you may not be able to reach the mounting bolts as they feed through from the bell housing within the transmission tunnel.
Its hard enough from below.
