settle a dispute please

Post by Smeeagain » Tue Feb 10, 2015 2:00 am

Do all X5's with an automatic gearbox require the driver to have his foot on the brake pedal to be able to start the car?

Well thats what started the debate.

Does an X5 auto (lets not complicate the question with other brands at this stage) that will start without foot on the brake have a fault? And if so is that then a gearbox fault or a starter fault?

I believe they will all start without your foot on the brake.

The safety feature is that you cannot move the gear lever out of P without your foot on the the brake. At least that's how mine works anyway.

My auto Wrangler is the same.

My reference to other brands was more of an age thing

The Navara is an 06 plate and therefore before nanny state really kicked in

X6 won't as it's a push button start.  X5 would as long as it was in 'P' or 'N' from memory.

Yeah, it's new nanny state BS. If I want to start my car in D through the open drivers window and run myself over ..... That is my human right!! ;-)

As Dennis has stated the X5 will start as long as it's in P. I've started mine numerous times while stood next to it and no pedal pressed.

OK other makes, my Mercedes (keyless go 61 plate) needs brake depressed, wife's Subaru (06 plate) same as the BMW as long as its in park it will start. One of my sons has a 61 plate Toyota Hilux manual and that you have to have the clutch depressed before it will start. The other son has a Nissan GTR that thing has more buttons than the star ship Enterprise so haven't asked
So it seems 535 Boy is on the money, if you want pre- nanny state don't buy anything newer than about an 08 plate is my guess.
