Climate Control Humming Noise - Help!

Hi all!

I recently took delivery of a 2005 x5 3.0d and am loving it, however today I came across a problem.

After about 20mins driving you can hear this humming noise inside the cabin, around the climate control unit. It tends to speed up and down and the longer you drive/leave it the order it gets.

If I turn the climate control off the sound disappears.

Anyone know what this might be? Is it something serious or expensive to fix?

The climate control still works absolutely fine - blows hot and cold air, auto etc no problem.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum. There is a small fan behind a tiny grille in the facia of the climate control unit. It draws air into the unit I think so it can sence the temperature in the cabin. The fan also sucks in dust which can stick to the surfaces and cause it to be noisy, you can remove the facia I think and see the fan, search the forum using the search facility, I'm sure there will be a post about it. Or try youtube. The unit is used in the E39 too.

thanks for that, i cleaned the little fan out this morning, however theĀ  noise is still there. It sounds like its coming from behind the climate control unit (inbetween engine and centre console).

It almost sounds like the engine is reving up and down (best i could describe it) but def not the engine...

Could it be the heater fan, maybe a dry bearing does the noise increase in line with fan speed. Not sure but some cars have several heater fans. Hope it's not the fan as I think it's a big job to change them.
