Pretty straightforward from what I have read.  See this link for details http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/179456

Thanks for the link. As soon as I saw words like "splice" it tells me it's not a plug and play which is a shame. Anything electrical and I run for the hills! Was hoping for a straightforward plug n play.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring retro-fit kit.... still available ??

The electrical stuff isn't a worry... BUT..

Where /  how does the vehicle monitor the pressures, and how is the individual tyre pressure monitored & data sent from the wheel ???  to where does it show ?

Never had this facility on a vehicle before, but it sounds good.

Regards
Grant B

On most versions (some V8's were different) the TPMS works via the ABS.

This system monitors the wheel rotation speed and if any one becomes different - caused by a flat tyre - then a yellow then red tyre warning symbol appears on the dash.  If you have a button on the lower centre console which looks like a cross section through a tyre with an exclamation mark in it then you have this system fitted.  As it is part of the ABS there is no need to replace anything.

The V8 version uses a transmitter installed inside each wheel and a receiver module.  When the pressure faults then that brings a warning light on.  U.S. Vehicles require this radio based system hence the V8s having it, though for some reason 6-cyl engines use the ABS based TPMS.  These transmitter sensor units do die after a while and need replacing.

There are no pressure readouts.

Sorry Grant..

I got that bit...  :)

:P

This one uses the ABS and triggers a "Tyre Defect" message on the dash...

Steamyrotter - Did you manage to install the kit successfully? Any tips - or was it straight forward like on the link above for the E38 How To guide?

Not got to fitting it yet as just had knee surgery and can't get in right angle.

Doesn't look that straight forward as access is pretty bad!
Just doing the research on alternative pickup points as believe there is an easier location!!!  (Famous last words!)
