e53 front seat belts

Does anyone have any idea if the front belts can be re-tensioned as both mine are very slow to retract etc

Dealer told me no when mine got like that but they were not an MOT failure.  Only option was to replace (at that time in 2009).

I've read that if you take off the pillar cover and pull the seat belts all the way out, then spray the reel with silicon spray that that frees them up.  I keep meaning to have a go at mine, but haven't got round to it yet.
