Gearbox oil change

Hi I've recently bought an 06 3.0d sport and just for piece of mind I got a diagnostics done! It came back with gearbox oil worn! I assume this just needs an oil change? What oil is recommended?

i reckon it's a 6 speed right? ZF transmission that is....

Do you have any idea what the diagnostics revealed? What error code it yielded so that they interpreted it as a  worn out oil?

You'd have to change the oil, oil filter, gasket, and oil pan screws. (out of which filter and oil- compulsory, of course) the rest, rather optional in my opinion.

Do you have any other symptoms when worn oil is involved? jerky shifts, etc?

Try to do a full oil change, flush, not partial.

P.S. I'm very interested as i have some issues with mine, as well...

Yes it's a 6 speed! Gear change is 100% very smooth! The mechanic had just told me the code read gear oil worn! I just can't seem to find the correct oil! He did warn me that the oil was expensive and that cheaper oils were available but I don't want to chance it after reading some horror stories!

Since you have a ZF box, what i would do is to pop a question to these guys at ZF, to be on the safe side !!
But then again i'm very curious what others that have dealt with this might have to say HERE....

There is a specific error code for the oil, you'll find it in discussions on this Forum - mainly in the E53 area.  Yes it just means changing the oil and filter.

Thanks, what oil is recommended I can't get through to my local bmw dealer! Is oem oil the only way to go or is there an alternative that is just as good?

Have a search on here for the oil type.  It does need to be the right one with the ZF boxes.  It isn't cheap either.

I believe member "kkx5" has recommended an oil which is much cheaper than your friendly neighbourhood dealer will sell you. Dealer will also tell you your car will self destruct within 3 miles if you use any other oil but then they would wouldn't they. Some people even believe it.

From what I've seen "kkx5" seems to know what he's talking about in these matters. Search his posts and you'll find the 1 on auto box oil changes.

Spoke to an auto gearbox specialist today in Dublin who informed me that it's the transfer box that flags up that fault not the gearbox its self! Can anyone confirm this as he has quoted me a decent price for servicing the gearbox and the transfer box?

Sounds right.  It's been seen before on here too, and  the oil changed.

That is correct the transfer box oil change service life will flag up as a fault code hen it's due for replacement . This is not the case for the gearbox .

All info re gearbox should be on the sticker (red/green) that is affixed to the g'box... Quick look underneath should reveal what is 'in it'.

Also if you INPA it should provide an info re type and make of oil being used.

Hope that helps
