Almost Happy New Year Guys n Girls...

Any way... as per the Landrover and other street cars Ive owned in the past....
Is there a modification pack that does away with the rear Drum Brake Shoes, to utilise the rear disk calliper & pads ???

The drum brakes are a damned nuisance, endlessly need adjusting, not good and not a very good braking bite either...
So.....
Was hoping that there is some kit or some thing that will...
.... fit a brake disk to the rear diff input joint ??
.... adapt the rear disk callipers to accept the hand brake linkage maybe ?

Any thing on the market that any one knows of ?

In theory,it is possible to fit a small braking disk between the rear prop-shaft to diff joints, and use the 4 input shaft mounting/securing bolts to accept a plate to take a small single piston calliper & cable attachment to operate.
Landrover off-roaders use a similar concept at the rear exit of the transfer box...

Any thoughts on this one ??

but landrover propshaft handbrakes are also useless,  range rover sport/disco 3 are on shoes same as x5

Endlessly needing adjusting?  I didn't find that on my E53 nor on my X6 and I use it all the time.  The first time the shoes needed replacing in the E53 was at 53k miles/6 years.  To my knowledge the X6 ones have never been touched at 20k miles/4 years.

It's only supposed to be something like 18% efficient as it isn't a 'service brake'.

If yours needs 'endless adjustment' and isn't biting then to me that suggests an underlying issue that needs looking at first.  Or you are expecting too much from it.

Not to mention that if misused has a habit of breaking half shafts!

It is likely im expecting too much from it...

My landrover handbrake drum set-up I replaced with a disk & calliper with fab results....
And I have done about 35k this year and adjusted the rear drum pads a few times, as I like the bite to be after just a few clicks...

So, maybe Richard is right..... im expecting too much from it....

Hand brake adjustment usually only required when the bleeding thing fails the mot....!!

try new rear discs and shoes if you think its bad, if previos owners no used it often then the drums (inside of disc) get all pitted and corroded and theres not much contact between the shoes and the drum

Mines got new rear discs and shoes and tbh the handbrake still isn't brilliant , when I pull the handbrake on my Mrs can get it back off lol  )

mine also had new discs and shoes and its still a very poor handbrake.
the only other thing i could try is to replace the bowden cables but that looks too dificult for a winter job!

+1 . I replaced my rear discs and handbrake shoes, didn't get any better though, I wouldn't like to rely on it if the car was a manual. I know you shouldn't but I used to solely rely on the Park pawl on the transmission.
IBe only had autos in all my Beemers and have never needed a handbrake that you 100 rely on, as you need in a manual car
