Self Leveling Suspension InActive - Error code: Compressor Relay

Post by dark_stranger » Tue Dec 30, 2014 9:59 am

Guys, I constantly have the above message on the dash, although the height looks fine, plus all fuses are fine. I therefore plugged in a scanner 1.4 with PA Soft and there are various error codes, but the obvious code is "Compressor Relay". What, where and how easy would this be to fix? Obviously, I guess this is the cause.

I have found a document on the web that shows where the relay is located, but lots more useful information.

http://www.bmwclub.lv/files/BMW_X5_Level_Control_Systems.pdf

Now a trip to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/ and find the part number. Hopefully, this will fix the issue.

Found the part http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=FA12&mospid=47740&btnr=61_4058&hg=61&fg=36

and only £4.99 on ebay, lets hope is really is only a £5 fix.

Replaced the relay, but still getting the error.  Attached the scanner and get the errors...

EHC

08/00 - Controling time, upwards

03/05 - Relay compressor

Any ideas?

Yep, it's a worn compressor. It's taking to long to reach the desired hight so it's assuming the pump isn't running so throws up the relay fault. A repair ring from bag piping andy off eBay should sort it out.

I used realoem to identify the part number and ordered off ebay. Relay turned up and didnt fit as completely different.  I would check the relay you have first and search by part number on the relay. Mine was a bosch.

Is it compressor ring repair kit I need? If so, there is a guy on ebay about 3 miles away that sells them.

[/quote]yep that's the one. As long as the pump motor is ok and the bore is not scored, the ring should fix it.

Does the bore need any lubrication, or is it supposed to run dry ?

Check ebay item 321370792426 and in the description section there is a video clip and documents as a guide.

Yup, bought one of these kits an hr ago, there is no mention of lubricating the piston bore, so presume it is assembled dry.

Now I need to find a relay, but can only find pumps & repair kits on Flea Bay

Search for Bosch Relay 0332019456

This is the one that fits an E53 Facelift (04) - 3.0i

Excellent- thanks for the numbers,
Ordered a NEW relay from Flea-Bay & the pump rebuild kit a few hours ago too....
Next weekend I will do this little job.
My X5 has done 140,000 miles, so this will be one job done to hopefully be one less thing to go wrong inconveniently...

I just started a new contract job as a Senior Engineer in the Midlands for a company that makes Air-Suspension Units... and by good fortune they make the E53 units for spare parts suppliers... and maybe we can save a small fortune if any of our members units fail here by passing on company details for parts at source.

I'm going to replace mine as a matter of course as soon as I can get my hands on a pair soon....
