3.0D judder and burning smell wheel too hot to touch

My car is 2004 and has achieved 308,000 miles 90% motorways. It has been well maintained. Recent new radiator/expansion tank. On second set of brakes 18 months ago. Running continental winter tyres rears are very worn, ordered replacements due this Friday.

At weekend wife driving, Icy rode -1, car developed sudden heavy judder and loss of power she pulled into lay bye.

I drove to her then AA arrived 40 minutes later followed me back to garage.
15 minutes no problem at all apart from loud tapping noise from under passenger footwell, it didn't seem to change its frequency with either engine revs or speed.

Then light judder, slight squeal front offside.

Told garage thought it could be a caliber problem or traction control having a migraine (it has hill descent option)

Next day village garage says can't find anything wrong.

30 minutes no problems, no tapping or judder.

Then onset of shudder through whole car not just finger tips, shudder was around 35-40MPH didn't improve when I knocked into neutral. Couldn't stop as on dangerous windy mountain road limped home through judder about 6 minutes.

Parked up at home car seemed to be creaking pinging and metallic clanging from front of car.

Burning plastic/ rubber smell offside wheel too hot to touch!

I hope this isn't terminal the engine is great and not drinking oil or rusting wreck.

Many thanks for any advice you can give me.

Could be wheel bearing or jammed caliper as suspected which once cooled down will go away.  Burning plastic smell would most likely be the seals getting too hot.

Jack the wheel off the ground and see hold the wheel at 12 & 6 and rock it top to bottome.  If it moves a fair bit then the bearing is definitely suspect - it may be running out of grease anyway if it has overheated - as it should barely move at all.

Is the disc discoloured (blued) on that corner?  Rotate the hub and listen for noises.  If you gently lever the pads off the disc a little (to eliminate a jammed caliper) and then rotate the hub, is there any feeling of roughness?  It should rotate smoothly.

Oh, and :hi: too.

Do as Richard mentioned.
Also look at the drive shaft and CV joint / gaitor.

If it was HDC / ABS i would have expected something alerting you to that via one of the LEDs up front or on the OBC

Developments!

I jacked up the previously extremely hot wheel, no play in bearings, not discoloured but noisy when compared to opposite side.

I drove up and down lane a few hundred yards light squeal on braking but no judder.

The loud clicking under passenger footwell started to slowly increase in frequency whilst sat stationary at idle.  After about 20 minutes it just stopped clicking!??

The car has been reluctant to start in recent weeks I put down to cold weather, it gets 2x 50 miles commute each day so expect it to get a good charge. Last battery changed 4 years ago (it was a good one)

I had decided to start car whilst offside wheel was jacked up to see if I could see any smoke coming from the area, car refused to start and "fail safe transmission mode" warning on dashboard.

Did I just confuse transmission having 1 wheel off ground, will it reset itself or is it really bad news?

I had to use jump leads to start it.

Feeling a bit sick at moment [emoji45]

Feeling a little less nauseated, I have no read about clicking auxiliary heater pump. Also switched to ignition point 2 until all lights went out then started it without problem. Turned off and no fail safe mode, so will take for a little run.

Cheers for your advice.

Ive had similar issues on my 330d. Turned out to be  a sticky  caliper piston .  A strip down and clean up sorted out the problem.

As others have said sounds like seized caliper to me! It wont be as noisy when cold but when caliper gets hot that's when you will get the juddering etc!
Keep us posted with your repair progress  8)

The clicking sound is probably the fuel dosage pump for the auxiliry heater, situated under the passenger floor.

I would agree with the suggestion of a seized caliper. Had this with a SAAB 9000- I found the car in the road, having rolled down the drive. Why? the front discs had heated up in use, I parked the car with the handbrake on operating on those discs, which, as they cooled down contracted thus releasing the grip of the pads, and off it went. So, be careful
