cold start limp mode

hi
Ive had a problem with my x5 54 plate it was the same last winter but not as bad and its back again this winter. The car always starts first time no issues, during the warmer days i just drive off no problems but when temperature drops to 7ish or less like it is now it goes straight into limp mode. I have to pull over after couple of minutes restart engine and its fine. but if i leave it all day in the cold till the evening its the same problem. My mechanic who is very good connected it for faults and the only things that he thought are related to was all glow plugs and glow plug module but he thinks this wouldnt cause limp mode. He reset all other faults and the glowplug module came straight up again. Now ive been driving for a week i will take it back next monday to see if any other codes are there before he does the module.

I do know when i first got the car 3 years ago i took it to local BMW specialist and he said then 3 glow plugs were out but it will be fine and it has been till now(apart from a few starts last year). Its possible the other 3 have gone as well to make it all 6, from what ive read the module can show all 6 broken.

Any thoughts ive googled it to death but no others with same problem
thanks

Mine is showing up as all 6 glow plugs not working and it starts and runs fine in cold weather, no limp mode , the plugs and control unit are on the jobs to do list

Hi, I've recently bought an 06 x5 3.0d sport auto and I'm having the same problem. Every morning since ownership the car has gone into limp mode. I've stopped locked and re-opened the car and everything has resumed! Have you got to the bottom of your problem

He changed the Maf sensor as this came up again as a fault,he reset codes and i went home happy. Next morning it was ok but it was 10°. Following day 4° and into limp mode. I took it back to him that night and maf sensor fault was there again even though he changed it(bosch one not from ebay) he was a bit confused why. That evening he sent me a link from xdrivers and a man with username robo. Had same symtoms and he noticed the air filter was not fitted properly not quite sure what he meant.

My mechanic asked me to take it back to him just so he can check air filter. Part of the filter had a 1" of the rubber seal broken off where the previous mechanic had forced it in. He showed me the bit of rubber but said he cant imagine it could cause my problem. It's been down to minus over Xmas and so far touch wood, it's been spot on again. Worth a look
