gearbox rebuild plan

Post by Smeeagain » Fri Dec 05, 2014 10:10 am

I'm on borrowed time as they say mileage wise, and probably tempting fate, as my gearbox has a fair old mileage on it and has never had the oil changed etc -I bought the car second hand and as it already had some miles on it I opted not to change the oil having heard some of the potential pitfalls in possibly accelerating the breakdown of the gearbox

Anyway, if it aint broke dont fix it as they say. For now it is fine and there is the occasional thump when coming to a standstill at a set of light etc but nothing else

I've got quotes, got the money set aside, and I know who will do the work, but my question is if I go for the gearbox rebuild what other related work do I get done at the same time that wouldn't be considered as part of a gearbox rebuild?

Change the oils in the diffs and transfer boxes.  Get the torque converter checked and TBH replace it anyway as you are going to get the box changed so it makes sense to do the lot.

Also get the Mechatronics unit (it's on the bottom of the box) off and throughly cleaned out to make certain the galleries have been cleaned and to look for any issues with the shift servos that are in there such as failed seals or bad servos.  Replacement MUs are not cheap - mine was £1,500 from ZF on its own - so a bit of preventative maintenance is worth doing.

Any idea of the cost of replacing the torque converter?

Mine was £250 for a brand new one five years ago.  You can get recon ones for less, but I don't know the price range.

yep...mines done 118k(05 3,0 d) and has a slight thump 2nd into 1st sometimes, how much is it for a re-build?

I kind of bargained in £2000 quid for repairs/running costs over the next 2 years, lol I think somewhere in the back of my mind, the gearbox was always going to be an issue at some point and accepted it, so far (2.5 months ownership) I cant find anything else much wrong, maybe the front bushes need doing as it shakes its head when braking from 70mph sharp and its wondering a bit in a straight line, but touch wood it's a great car and can't think what else is available that is comparable for my 6.5k....very happy.

Slight thump does not mean a rebuild necessarily. Search on here for thump comments. I was quoted £1600 from jason chiptune but you are in Sheffield. it was an extra £50 is solenoid needed replaced and then you have transfer case oil etc (cant remember if gearbox oil was in the recost build or not). So yes £2k should cover you
And yes the  way you've described it it probably is front bushes but there are several different ones if I recall.

Mine were front control arm bushes

Smee, is it best/easier to just swap out the control arms for new ones with bushes already in or is it easy enough to fit new bushes to the original arms....I do not have a bush press etc and its a job I intend doing when the weather becomes warmer.

Agreed - all i said was that the issue was the bushes - What I neglected to say was that I replaced the whole arm/bush assembly
