Tried the new BMW enabled Spotify App today on my E70 (2011). Although I could play music and browse, the steering wheel controls wouldn't work plus I couldn't move forwards or backwards through tracks.
Anyone else tried it?

BMW have a nasty habit of not making everything fully backwards compatible, and then saying an option will only work from a particular production week. A few have been caught by that one, especially those made in late 2010 up to March/April 2011. BMW changed the Combox design and those made before that date won't work and cannot have a retrofit.
Have a look at the BMW Connected website and see if there is a firmware update. You can diy by using a USB memory stick.

Not looked at the detail of this, but I just use Spotify from my phone connected via BT - does it mean you can operate it from the iDrive instead of your phone?

Looks that way from the press release.

If its anything like the Napster app, you need to have your phone plugged into a cradle (not via BT) if you want to use the idrive to control it.
On the Napster app, the functionality is not great but at least you won't get arrested for using your mobile whilst driving... not that you would...... O:-)

It will give me something to do instead of changing the DAB station every 500 metres when I lose reception again

An update on this. I used the car again today and the steering wheel controls worked! It would however not display any info on the track being played.
I then used the car a bit later, and now it's all working including the track info in the entertainment side screen.
Wierd!

If you're streaming over 3G or 4G, the signal might be patchy which might prevent the info. from being displayed maybe? Have you made the tracks available offline in Spotify? If so, you don't need to worry about streaming over 3G/4G as they are downloaded to your phone. Having said that, on mine, for any given album, there are always one or two songs that won't display the album cover when playing.
Loving the app although you have to go through the rigmarole of connecting etc. again if you take a phone call. Unless anyone knows a workaround?
