Drain / Scuttle drain maintenance

Post by kjb1 » Sun Nov 23, 2014 10:51 pm

Hi all.  Thought I would start a little thread for Winter maintenance known to be a requirement on the X5.

I hear so many stories of check your Scuttle drains, etc.  But if totally honest, have no clue where to look on the X5.  What drains would be regarded as priority to check on the e70?

Any pictures available anyone?

Under the bonnet, close to the windscreen are two plastic grills - the one on the left covers the brake fluid reservoir.  Loosen the plastic screws and carefully remove the grills.  You'll need double jointed arms to get down to the bottom of the wells, especially for the right side,  but down there are two rubber plugs that are supposed to have openings/flapper valves in them to let water drain away.  Both get bunged up with dead leaves etc.  I find it easier to remove the plugs and wash the rubbish away - it drains down to the outside. Wash out the plugs and refit everything - and you should be clean to go for another year!

Hope this helps...

Graeme
