Bit of an exhaust leak in the engine bay and I think the hose in the attached picture is the culprit. Exhaust smell coming through heater and can see some fumes coming from drivers wheel arch. Can anyone name the hose for me? It's the bendy silver section that attaches to the solid silver steel pipe.
If it's a non-exhaust hose then any pointers would be appreciated.

That's one of the air conditioning lines. It contains compressed gas so is unlikely to be the source of your problem.
The fresh air inlets are all under the top section of the scuttle - where the grilles are up top in front of the screen.

Thanks Richard. OK exhaust definitely not coming out of that!
Any pointers as to where it could be coming from? Manifold, exhaust etc. sit below that pipe? Odd I can see fumes coming out of the drivers side wheel arch at idle.

The exhaust manifold is that side and there have been instances of cracked/split manifolds which would explain the smell & fumes.

Just had my manifold changed today for that very reason. Streaming eyes after sat in traffic! All good now though & the old manifold looked cracked in about 4 places.

...is manifold crack(ing) common to all models or predominantly diesels?

From what I've read it's a reasonably common occurrence on all BMW 6 cylinder diesels with the fabricated rather than cast manifolds.

Dare I ask how much a new manifold and labour is? Have seen a few guides and it seems to be extensive work.

Cracked exhaust manifold on 3.0i? Very unlikely. Leaking rocker cover gasket is your problem... oil dropping on exhaust manifold.

Have to agree 3.0i probably leaking rocker gasket caused by a failed ccv pressure in the rocker cover. Try removing the oil filler cap with the engine running. Should be a slight vacuum if it blows the cap off or has a massive vacuum then the ccv is shot and needs replacing.

I think the confusion is that that photo you've posted looks more like a 3.0 i engine not a diesel, I took it to be a petrol As I couldn't see the Webasco, and the engine covers looked different to my old 3.0d, more like my 530i

If it's a d I'd put money on it being the manifold (£150 for a cast replacement) and about 3hrs labour.
