Aux Heater ?
Aux Heater ?
Hi, (e53)
I have found the Aux heater on my display, ::), I leave for work at 5:20 am so have set the clock for 5:10am, will that be enough time to heat the cabin??
I have also noticed there is a timer 2 and another option that I cannot select, any ideas what the third option is??
cheers

Re: Aux Heater ?
Very interested in this also, mine is the same 2 x timers and a direct option which i also cant select, i set mine for 7.00am tomorrow to see what happens, but wondering if the timer 2 is an off time
Re: Aux Heater ?
If I recall correctly as I haven't had to use mine this winter yet ......
Timer 1 comes on and runs for 30 mins then stops. Timer 2 is a second timer that you can set for a later time and runs for another half hour. So you could have Timer 1 on early morning and then Timer 2 in the afternoon/eve when you get back in the car.
It depends how cold it is whether ten mins is enough. IF you want to defrost heavy ice probably not. If you want to take the chill off then maybe . I find 20-30 mins on a cold day (ie below freezing) is about right.
The other option that you cant select may be AUX Venting (as opposed to AUX heating) - Aux venting can be selected with scanner 1.4.0 and does the same function but it is like the aircon and cools the car rather than heating it (for use in summer or in hot countries)

Re: Aux Heater ?
Aux ventilation is a pretty useless option- as Smee says, meant to cool car down via timer but generally viewed as not much good.
The Aux Heater is brilliant - you can set it via the timers or use the BMW remote available from dealer for around £200, to operate it directly. I set mine this morning on the timer at 630 and by 645 when I left home, it was nice and warm inside the car and the condensation and frosty windows were nice and clear.
You can set the second timer for say, 5pm if you leave work around 530pm and it will warm up the car before you leave work. If the battery is not sufficiently charged then it will not start up the heater.
I have the petrol version of the Webasto , what a brilliant piece of kit.

Re: Aux Heater ?
I thought only diesels had them, is it a common option on the e53 or is it on later cars only?

Re: Aux Heater ?
Any idea as to why I dont 'auxillary heating' option on my display? I do have 'the Auxillary venting' timer option.
My webasto is in working order & when it runs (off the remote) the little fan symbol on the display flashes.
Any ideas anyone?

Oh I think I jumped the gun a bit......I have AUX ventilation not heating, I set it yesterday and when I got in the car at 5am it was freezing.......great if you live in portugal, not so great here.
Anyone know if it can be made to run warm?

Re: Aux Heater ?
no afraid not! you need to retrofit a webasto! or to have some form of remote start for the car so it can remain locked etc and sit idling whilst you go about your bits in morning!!

Re: Aux Heater ?
That's because you need a different option called 'Auxillary Heating' which was a cost 'add-on' at build. It still uses the same Webasto unit (standard on diesel E53s) and adds a control module and remote key fob. This can be turned on to heat the car a few minutes before you leave for wherever. It has a fuel level detector and battery sensor so it neither empties the tank nor kills the battery.
Petrol E53s need to have the whole system added, including the correct Webasto unit.
There is a very long thread on how to enable it, or do a DIY controller, on the forum.
Aux Ventilation is to cool the car down after it's been parked in the sun all day.

Re: Aux Heater ?
This is quite a complicated exercise - I did this with my E38. To provide control from the climate control panel requires this to be replaced as there is a 3rd small socket on the back to provide/receive the necessary signals (and no, you can't modify the existing one). This in turn means either an additional piece of harness, or more likely replacement of the entire harness for the aux heater.
As mentioned there is also a component called a 'collector' or some such term, mounted in the C pillar usually. This has to be replaced, to be able to receive the signal from the separate hand held (new) remote, and transmit this via a (new) co-ax cable to yet another (new) module which in turn passes this to the (new) climate panel, to signal the heater to switch on.
Even more: the plumbing also requires an (new) additional water valve which ensures that only the heater system operates in the parking mode, rather than trying to heat the entire engine as well. Quite a bit of work, and best to buy a 'kit' removed from another car, or it gets expensive...

Generally only found on diesels. But was a very expensive optional extra on a few petrols, usually found on 4.8's. i think the later models, ie E70 etc do not have the Webasto options for diesels or petrols, it is E53s that have them.

Re: Aux Heater ?
Correct. No longer standard for the E70/71 & F15 as they have faster warm up engines. It was primarily used for warming the coolant systems and as a by product the cabin plus could be specced with Aux heating functionality.
It was a £1200 cost option on my X6 and as the engine is producing warm air in under a minute, not needed IMHO, so I didn't add it but did add steering wheel heating. Any that have got the Webasto on later cars are the lucky few.....

Re: Aux Heater ?
for a novice user... if one was to have 'Heating' option to complement ventilation will that be a separate line item on the display or...?
and to add... is it possible to check if webasto is physically present in the car, i.e. is it visible and if known, where is it located :'(?
Cheerio
