What are winter tyres?

E53 manual says this:

Image

Wikipedia says in the North America its 3PMSF ("Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake"), nothing defined for Europe.

The AA says 'The sidewall of a winter tyre will be marked with a symbol showing a snowflake or snow-topped mountains'.

Black Circles says 'If an all-season tyre bears the "M + S" mark on the sidewall, these will be considered as an adequate alternative', for example for Austia.

So in summary real winter tyres are 3PMSFs, although Europe seems to accept M+S tyres as well. Correct?

Country rules vary, but this article might help.

Note also the comment about the freezing point of UK diesel compared to EU diesel.

I saw this before and was gong to reply  "tyres made for winter conditions" oh and I think they should have a snowflake on them &/or on marketing material.

I bought Dunlop Winter Sports. Tyre wall Suitably designed with the snowflake and all that:).

Off eBay from Germany, 7+mil thread, £330 for the lot.

There are loads out there but I wanted thread depth (min 4 for snow), wanted proper snow stuff not just M+S which is actually crap.

didin't spot this post.

i bought the OEM 17" off ebay, so not staggered on the winter kit.

could have bought for my standard rims as well but then a) i didn't want to compromise from the recommended if i was already spending; b)have to keep taking them off the rim everytime i want to swap summers to winters and the other way around. so went with oem 17"s.

they look like shopping trolley tyres though, compared to the fat-ass standard staggered kit!
