Well i was glad i was sitting down...

It passed with one advisory....
parking brake just within limits.

I'm reasonably happy with that...

If they did the handbrake test with one of those decelerometer machines then you'll always get an advisory. It has to be 16% efficient so as long as the machine show 16% it's a pass. There's no point in getting the handbrake to stop at 25% efficiency, even if it could, as 16% comes first and is a pass.

I'd still strip down the rear brakes to have a look. I had an advisory 1 year and had them checked just before the next MOT. They were a complete mess and needed discs, pads, shoes and a little welding of the back plate so that the shoe retaining springs would hold. Lack of use causes the problem as if you're like me, and have an auto, handbrake use is minimal. I now give mine a little use every week to keep stuff moving back there.

At least you didn't get spurious advisories on undertray's and engine covers!!!

why do you say handbrake use is minimal with an auto. Do you sit at the lights with the car in D and foot on the brake rather than P and handbrake?

What did you mean about spurious advisories on undertrays and engine covers?

I think some MOT centres were flagging that they could not see everything because of the under trays etc, and put advisories on.  Completely wrong in my opinion!

I always use the auto brake when driving (it keeps the foot brake on) and my handbrake is used when parked.  NEVER trust an Auto's parking pawl alone.

I was speaking for myself and how I use a handbrake. If I sit at lights it's usually in D with the footbrake on. If it's a long sit then I'll probably put the shifter to N and sit with the footbrake on. I wouldn't sit with just the handbrake on as that will never hold if someone hits you up the ass with any force.

If I'm stopped somewhere for any length of time I just put the gearbox into P and not use the handbrake at all; hence, lack of use.

Richard and many other people use the auto differently but that's how I use it.

Ref undertrays etc please see my post here: http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/t ... l#msg95102
