See this page on Realoem.  Only one type and the oil is listed too.

Even if there is more than one, the parts folks should be able to get the right one from your VIN anyway so I'm not surprised you are unsure of the parts drone.

Thanks for info, i have purchased the 858 fliud but on further investigation on outpost they say the 858 oil is for non xdrive, mine is 2006 so should have xdrive.. very confusing

anyway rang the dealer again and he checked his system, 858 is the right oil.... told him to go and talk to a master technician as i am sure 858 is for early e53's (non x drive).. 5 mins later a very apoligetic parts guy informed my i was right and the systems were wrong at BMW.  i would have been angry had i already used the 858 oil!

part number TF0870 / 83 22 0 397 244 is the correct oils for BMW E53 with xdrive

its not wonder people have transfer box problems when BMW are telling them to put in the wrong oil in them...

This needs to be made a sticky, save others making the same mistake

just to add/enquire... is It worth assuming that all facelift X53's do have xDrive system 'by default'?

Yes.  It was part of the facelift change.
