Can somebody tell me, that has had experience, if,,
The winter tyres that are available, do they generate any more road noise than a summer tyre.
Due to the deeper , more "aggressive" tread.?
Im contemplating getting a set of 19" wheels and tyres to use over the coming winter months...
Thanks...

I have Vredestein Wintrac Extremes, non r/flats on 19" wheels. 255x50x19 107 on the front and 285x45x19 111 on the rear (and two tins of tyreweld in the back)! They are quieter, give a more compliant ride and better fuel economy. I had them on for about 6000 miles last winter - and there was no snow here in NE England. - Good insurance!!!

I have exactly the same winter set up as Graeme and concur with his findings. Must get another bottle of the gooey stuff before they go on this winter.

I have had a set of genuine BMW winter runflats for the last two years on my 40d.
They are Goodyear 255/19 front and rear and they are quieter than the 255/285 summer set.
As said, I just feel a little 'cheated' as we have had little or no snow, in fact it hardly ever fell below 7 degrees last year, not like -20 in 2009/10

The great and powerful ADAC runs yearly tests on tyres, and finds winter tyres, quieter than summer. This seems counter-intuitive to me but who am I to argue with them? Indeed, our own winter tyres, are surprisingly quiet (even Hakkapeliittas on the Dangel Berlingo).
tyres, tyres, tyres, Hard to take the mickey out of us yanks O:-)

With me feeble command of your phine language, I did my best to overcome my handicap and address the issue.
(I actually teach English to frogs these days, and fully concede that y'all speak better than we yanks do)

I also ran Vreds, and as said they're quieter than standard tyres.
Not sure what you mean by "more aggressive tread" though!

Ditto, I ran the standard staggered sizes on 19's, found them quieter than. My summers too. ( Vred wintrac extreme) the tread pattern looks more severe on pictures bit it isn't, there's tiny slits in the surface to trap snow, as snow. Sticks to snow better than rubber apparantly !
Sure someone will correct me if this is wrong

That's what I meant about "aggressive" tread pattern.
Thanks to all of you that have replied.
I might just take the plunge , although we don't get a great deal of snow around the Blackpool area...

Fun fact - those little grooves and slits are called 'sipes'.
