4.4 ran out of fuel now runs lumpy

Hi folks, seen an x5 at a dealers, ran fine 3 weeks ago but they let it run out of fuel and now it runs lumpy.
This must be more complicated than a fuel filter and pump otherwise they'd have fixed it instead of knocking £500 off the price.
What damage might have been caused by letting it run dry?

Could be air still in the system meaning the fuel pressure is low. Sometimes it can take several attempts to purge the lines. The dealer could put a scanner on the car and look for fault codes and then they'd know.

I just need to keep saving and wait as I don't need to get anything until next July, getting impatient though! best to just hang on till the coffers will stretch to a black 4.6

Unlikely to be air in the system as the fuel pump primes the system prior to starting. Turn the key to postion 2, and you'll hear the fuel pump come on - then stop. That's primed.
I'd suspect fuel filter or injectors - it probably sucked up all the crap and sediment off the floor of your fuel tank. Whatever didn't get caught by the filter will be in the injectors. If it were my car I'd replace fuel filter and run a bottle of injector cleaner through your next full tank. Hopefully that clears it out.
Given it's not your car, and you're obviously looking as a prospective buyer, I'd be telling them to sort it out and they can call you when it's fixed. Otherwise find another.

Nice X5 there Jay wish I'd bought the 4.4 instead of the 3.0i.

Wish I'd bought the 4.8 to be honest.
