x5 4.8is Ticking/rattling noise - UPDATED

Post by greg1980 » Mon Oct 13, 2014 12:31 am

Hi,

Please watch the video and let me know what you think it might be. It only happens when when the engine is cold and it lasts for about 5 to 8min, then is quiet . We did try to change oil to 0w40 but it didn't help. BMW hasn't lost power, goes like it should. Doesn't sound as bad in reality like on the video.

PS. smoke at the begging is from cigarette.

Before buying my first X5 and before joining here I did a lot of reading on the internet to see what if any issues there were with them.
This is one of the sites I found it may help in working out what the problem is, unfortunately my experience is when your talking "engine" there are no cheap fixes.

Have a look here  http://www.meeknet.co.uk/E31/BMW_M60_M6 ... Noises.htm

Fingers crossed

The sound is coming from hydraulic lifters. No 9:

More then likely oil valve is not holding fluid for long time hence tapping on cold start, no 8:

Expensive to repair.
Try good oil, not cheap castrol, mobile1 etc. Go for Amsoil, Red line 5w-30. It will improve it ...

doesn't sound great does it!

To try located the source of the sound, get a long screwdriver (as in 15") and put it against various places on the valve train cover. Press the handle to your ear. It's like a mechanic's stethoscope.  Report back.

It sounds worse on youtube than in reality.

When I had a hydraulic tappet gone, it sounded just like that.

x5 in the garage now. We went with stethoscope and the sound seems to come from underneath or around oil filler cap. So far looks like the cam chain related, will have new tensioners put in tomorrow and will see if that improves.

I assume you removing engine? How do you want to change it on left bank?  Good luck but it seems like you or garage knows nothing about n62 engine :(

Time will tell. They might be able to do it without removing the engine. We have notice the tight space there. I rather start with simple things. I have really good mechanics, a people who I trust and I have no doubt in their qualification.
